Public Health Update

It’s not too late to be vaccinated against both H1N1 and seasonal flu. The H1N1 flu virus is still circulating in our area. Thankfully, we have seen a decrease in rates of H1N1 illness over the past several weeks; however, flu is unpredictable!

As we enter February and March, our typical flu season, it is especially important to take preventive measures. These measures include staying home when you are sick, covering your coughs and sneezes, practicing good hand washing, and getting vaccinated. The public health department and many area providers have ample supply of both types of vaccines. We encourage all citizens to get vaccinated against both seasonal and H1N1 flu. Call our office to make an appointment. It’s not too late.

Know what to do about the fluSwine-Variant (H1N1) Flu

In April 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed an unusual influenza virus outbreak. Since that time cases of Swine-Variant (H1N1) Flu have been identified throughout the United States and the world. In Ontario County, we have been doing active surveillance for Swine Flu (looking for cases) since April and as of June 3, 2009 we have confirmed H1N1 influenza cases in Ontario County.

Is Ontario County Ready for an Emergency?

We are looking for people who would be willing to work at a clinic where medication is given to area residents. The goal is to set up a site in every school district in the county. We need people who would be willing to serve in key roles – both medical and non medical - to assure that we are prepared. No prior training or experience is required for those looking to volunteer for a non medical role. We will provide training and offer opportunities to participate in drills.
