CHRONIC DISEASES
Chronic diseases and conditions are those that last for an extended period of time. Some chronic diseases, like asthma and multiple sclerosis, may alternate between periods of active disease and periods of being symptom free. Other chronic diseases grow progressively worse over time without periods of symptom remission.
Chronic diseases account for most of the top ten killers in the United States. In developing countries where access to care may be more limited, acute infectious diseases are more frequent in the list of the top ten.
Ontario County’s website has listed very basic information about several of these chronic diseases together with links to reputable sites where you can learn much more. The U.S. Government, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institute of Health maintain most of the sites listed below. Other good sources include articles prepared and maintained by major medical centers, like the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins Medical Center.
