Developmental Milestones - Newborn to 12 Months

AGE	HAND,MOTOR & SELF HELP SKILLS	LANGUAGE, SOCIAL & LEARNING SKILLS
Newborn	Sucking & swallowing well. Will squeeze your finger when put in her palm	Will turn head toward your finger if cheek is touched.
1-3 Months	Lifts head up briefly when on belly. Reacts to sudden movement or noises.	Makes "cooing" sounds. Follows moving objects with eyes. Appears to stare at times. Smiles when played with. Grasps small object if placed in hand.
3-6 Months	Lifts head & chest when on belly, tries to roll over. Sits with support. Kicks legs & moves arms when on back; looks at hands & fingers,sometimes folds hands on chest. Tries to reach & hold objects.	Seems to know familiar objects & is happy to see them (parents' faces, bottle, toys, mirror). Makes babbling sounds like "ee,ih,uh", sometimes laughs or chuckles. Turns head toward sounds such as bell, voice.
6-9 Months	Sits by self when placed. Rolls from stomach to back & back to stomach.Begins to creep on belly, rock back & forth on knees. Reaches, hold & puts objects in mouth. Feeds self cracker, may pass objects from one hand to the other.	Naps about 1-4 hours/day. Makes sounds like "baba, gugu, didi". Uses crying to show needs; hunger, anger, discomfort. Knows strangers from family; cries when parent goes away. Begins to play simple games. Looks at person speaking, may respond to own name.
9-12 Months	Pulls self to sitting and/or standing positions for short periods. Creeps or crawls, perhaps backwards at first. Picks things up with thumb and forefinger, looks closely at objects; may place objects in & out of containers; can stack two blocks.	Understands simple words like "mommy", "daddy", "dog", "bye-bye"; knows own name. Pays attention to simple commands like "No" & "Give it to me". Copies sounds like clicking & coughing, and words likd "mama" & "dada". Plays with family members. Gives affection & love.

0-12 MONTHS	12-24 MONTHS
2 - 3 YEARS	3 - 5 YEARS
