ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE
People abuse drugs and other substances for many different reasons. The types of substances they use also vary greatly. They include legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco, and illegal drugs ranging from marijuana to cocaine, from methamphetamine to heroin – too many to mention.
About 10% of Americans abuse alcohol. Almost 25% of Americans still smoke. A 1996 survey estimated that about 13 million Americans use illicit drugs. The impact on these individuals, their family members and society as a whole is immeasurable.
